Job overview

We have some opportunities for Speech and Language Therapists with an interest in working with adults with acquired disorders to work on the bank for the SLT service. The adult community service works across Derby city and Derbyshire, we also have a Service Level Agreement to provide the service to Derby Hospitals. There are established and highly experienced  SLTs working in these areas, with strong working relationships with the wider MDT. Our service is primarily delivered to adults in their settings; home, care home, local hospital and acute hospital.

Main duties of the job

We are a large and dynamic Speech and Language Therapy service of around 100 staff working across all service areas in Derbyshire. We are looking for HCPC and RCSLT registered Speech and Language Therapists, with  experience in a specialist area and established skills in dysphagia assessment and management.

You will be proficient in your abilities to deliver high-quality, evidence-based practice, with assessment and therapeutic abilities, including dysphagia management in this specialist area.

You will have a commitment to providing a high standard of patient-focused care and be a strong team player.

Working for our organisation

Our purpose is to provide community health services to a patient population of over one million people in Derbyshire and Derby, as part of Joined Up Care Derbyshire. We employ around 4,200 substantive staff, caring for patients in 11 community hospitals and more than 30 health centres, as well as in clinics, GP practices, schools, care homes and, increasingly, in people’s own homes and via virtual consultations. During the pandemic response we have led the implementation of public vaccination centres in collaboration with partners across health and social care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient Care

  • To reflect on all aspects of clients’ communication and swallowing difficulties and identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communication and safe eating and drinking.
  • To negotiate with carers, clients and others around individual case management.
  • To manage complex and specialist caseload independently
  • To make a differential diagnosis on the basis of evidence from assessment
  • To develop clear care plans based on best practice
  • To adapt practice to meet individual patient/client circumstances
  • To apply highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients/clients
  • To provide specialist clinical/technical skills for highly interpretative assessment techniques and interventions, i.e. phonetic transcription, linguistic profiling
  • To demonstrate skills in handling clients with disabilities
  • To assess, develop and implement Specialist Speech and Language Therapy Treatment
  • To provide specialist advice to others regarding the management and care of patients/clients with communication difficulties
  • To demonstrate high level of clinical effectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures
  • To write reports reflecting highly specialist knowledge
  • To adapt practice to meet individual patients’ circumstance, including due regard for cultural, linguistic and cognitive differences
  • To ensure that patients are involved in the planning and prioritisation of their care plans wherever possible
  • To provide appropriate specialist intervention and evaluate outcomes
  • To apply good negotiation skills across a range of issues
  • To apply skills in dealing complex issues to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Recognised SLT Degree
  • HCPC registered
  • Registered member of RCSLT
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of relevant CEN

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Relevant experience post reg including dysphagia, stroke and /or rehab experience
  • 2 years post qualification as an SLT
  • Experience of delivering training
  • In depth knowledge of appropriate assessment and therapeutic interventions for the role
Desirable criteria
  • 3 years post qualification experience
  • Experience of supervising students and assistants

  • Good presentation skills both written and verbal
